Giving Thanks for Courage

Giving Thanks for Courage

A man and woman jumping joyfully from a hilltop with the sun shining brightly behind themIt’s Thanksgiving Week, and hopefully we can all find something to be thankful for, even if we are facing difficult personal challenges.

I’m thankful for the clients I work with in divorce mediation and collaborative divorce cases – you have the courage to do what most people can’t. It’s easy to hide behind lawyers and fight for as much as you can get instead of working together to bring about a resolution that is satisfactory for everyone.

“I acknowledge the emotional risks being taken to participate in mediation or collaborative divorce.” – David Louis

I give thanks that you are open and vulnerable enough to work toward a more noble result that allows for greater dignity. I acknowledge the emotional risks being taken to participate in mediation or collaborative divorce.

The end of a marriage is momentous, painful and difficult. When the end is done badly the repercussions can last for the rest of one’s life. When handled well, it frees both spouses to move forward.

It takes courage to be fully present, to work together, to end well and to walk away more hopeful and less uncertain.

I’m thankful that you’ve trusted me to work with you in a respectful process that can help you both move through this passage into the next chapter of your life’s journey.

I give thanks to you for one of life’s greatest gifts – being given the chance to make a difference in the lives of others. Your courage makes this possible.

Happy Thanksgiving.

  4. Hi, David. It has been a while since we have talked and I miss those conversations. I liked very much what you had to say about our clients having the courage to confront one another and their mutual difficult situation. It also occurred to me that courage is something that supersedes fear. People who are not afraid need not have courage. It is those who face their own deep seated and perhaps intense fears that develop and realize courage. David, thanks for your dedication. Hope to see you again soon…….ron

    • David Louis says:

Ron, thank you for your kind comments. You make a very interesting point about the role of fear in our work, and I’ve discussed this in another post. Your observation that courage is a way to face fear makes sense. I believe that much of the fear that our clients exhibit comes from their uncertainty about the future. Our clients can create a level of certainty in their future by our work in mediation to help them to come to their own decisions regarding the details of the end of their marriage. By reducing their uncertainty, fear subsides and can be replaced by focus and planning. Best wishes.

Very nice, David. Thank you. Your words are true, and I want to thank you for
being fair, neutral, and compassionate during Steve’s and my time with you. Also, thank you for recommending us to Caroline. She was great. I liked her very much. I hope your Thanksgiving words
